Background of the Study

In recent years, vocational education has emerged as a transformative force in the educational sector, particularly among secondary school students seeking self-employment opportunities in Mokwa Local Government Area, Niger State. Traditional academic pathways often fail to provide the practical skills required in today’s dynamic labor market; hence, vocational training offers an alternative route by emphasizing hands-on learning and entrepreneurial development (Akinola, 2023). By integrating technical training with entrepreneurial modules, these programs empower students to launch small businesses and foster self-reliance. Recent studies indicate that vocational education stimulates creativity and improves problem-solving skills, which are critical in the self-employment arena (Nwachukwu, 2024). In Mokwa, innovative initiatives are gradually being adopted to provide students with marketable skills that directly contribute to entrepreneurial success. These initiatives are designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enabling students to develop competencies that are highly valued in local markets (Ibrahim, 2025). The curriculum has been revised to include modules on business planning, financial management, and modern digital tools, thereby equipping students with the skills needed to navigate the competitive business environment. Collaboration with local entrepreneurs and industry experts has further enriched the training programs, offering mentorship and practical exposure. However, challenges such as inadequate resources, outdated training equipment, and limited access to modern technology persist, potentially hindering the full impact of these programs (Olatunji, 2023). Additionally, socio-cultural factors and traditional career expectations may influence students’ willingness to pursue self-employment. The rapid evolution of global market trends underscores the need for continuous curriculum updates to maintain the relevance of vocational education. This study seeks to evaluate how vocational education impacts self-employment opportunities among secondary school students in Mokwa, offering insights into how educational practices can be improved to foster a robust entrepreneurial culture.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized potential of vocational education to enhance self-employment opportunities among secondary school students in Mokwa, several challenges persist. One critical issue is the misalignment between the skills taught in vocational training and the specific demands of modern entrepreneurial ventures (Ade, 2023). Many schools are hampered by outdated equipment and curricula that do not reflect current business practices, limiting students’ readiness to start and sustain their own enterprises. Additionally, inadequate funding and infrastructural support contribute to a suboptimal training environment. These shortcomings prevent students from gaining the hands-on experience necessary for success in entrepreneurial endeavors (Ibrahim, 2024). Socio-cultural factors, including a traditional preference for formal employment, further discourage young people from pursuing self-employment. The lack of structured industry mentorship and practical business exposure also plays a role in the persistent skills gap observed among graduates. Consequently, the full potential of vocational education in transforming students into successful entrepreneurs remains under-realized. This study aims to explore these challenges in depth by investigating the disconnect between vocational training and entrepreneurial application, thereby providing evidence-based recommendations to improve the efficacy of such programs (Chinwe, 2025).
